As I was procrastinating the other day, I decided to watch 500 Days of Summer for the first time. I know, I'm a bit late. It left me feeling so emotional for some reason, like reality hit me in the face. Life is hard, and real life love is not a fairytale.
Romantic movies are not really my thing and I haven't watched a lot of them. However, I managed to watch some that turned out to be really really good and ended up being my favourites. These movies give me exactly what I am looking for - real, complex, relatable and a lot of feels.

This is a story about two people who met on the train going to Vienna. They spent the night there, talked about life and wandered around the city. Until they had to part ways and promised to see each other again. Their story is told in three parts, and it's the realest a love story could get. The emotions are raw, the characters are genuine and it portrays love in its beauty and ugliness. I could listen to these two characters talk and argue all day. It's witty and funny and smart.
I learned a lot from this trilogy.

2. Blue Valentine (2010)
This will get your heart broken. I was bawling my eyes out when I watched this movie.
Probably because it felt so real and it could happen to real people - it could happen to me.
Human love is imperfect. Life is not always made of happily-ever-afters.

3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
This is a story of a couple who fell in love and then fell out of love. To the point that they wanted each other's memories removed from their own minds. In the end they realised they had good and bad memories together, and could maybe give each other a second chance.

4. 500 Days of Summer (2009)
Not all our relationships are going to last, and sometimes two people are just not meant to be. 500 Days of summer shows just that. People will hurt us, people change, and people leave. But along the way, we might just meet someone better, someone who is right for us.

5. A Walk to Remember (2002)
Although A Walk to Remember is based on a Nicholas Sparks' novel, I am including it on this list because I found the characters to be relatable. I fell in love when they did, and cried when the movie showed the reality of death in people's lives. That death is something out of our control, and we could only do so much in the time we have left.

6. Brooklyn (2015)
Our life is not only going to be comprised of romance. There is family, friends and career that will be in the picture. It is up to us what to prioritise first. This movie shows the story of an Irish girl who migrated to Brooklyn for a better life. It shows her struggle of adjusting to a new life, being away from her lover, and choosing between love, family and career.
