The SatNav was our best friend on this trip. Most of the time it found the quickest routes that led us to main roads and to our destination. One time though, it took us to to the most uncommon route that went from the foot of the mountains, up, down and around. Our SatNav friend led us to the passing place. The narrow roads were not the ideal roads to drive on but the view totally made up for it. On our way to the small town of Hawkshead, we made several stops on the road to take in the view (and pictures).
The Beatrix Potter Gallery was located in Hawkshead. The gallery showed Beatrix Potter's original artworks, pictures and the things she collected when she was on holidays. I admired how simple, clean and very detailed her drawings were. We had some lunch on the local pub - the classic fish and chips, and a homemade lasagna for me. Good food, good food. For dessert, we grabbed 2 giant slices of cake from the cutest little cafe ever. I am not exaggerating. The cake slices were. Massive.
Our goal was to go on a different lake each day we were in Lake District. So after our visit to Hawkshead, we went down the mountain to the town of Coniston. Despite the bad weather, we rode the cruise that went round Coniston Water and said hello to John Ruskin's house. After we got off the cruise, the sun decided to show himself (assuming the sun is a 'him'), hung around the lake before we went home and lit the fire place. I guess there was no summer up North. A fire was needed.
On the 4th day, Honister pass was our destination. The journey took a little longer because we had to stop several times. Some people stretched, had a toilet break, and mainly because of the scenery. We didn't even notice we were driving for hours because the scenery was just too beautiful. There were a lot of hidden places that weren't saturated with people; like the lake we found called Buttermere and Crummock lake. It was located on the side of the road hidden behind the tall trees. We had to get out of the car and walk down to the lake to have a better view. Ah, hidden gem.
